Designing websites that convert without looking like everyone else

Conversion best practices have produced a generation of identical websites. Distinctiveness is now a performance advantage.

By Rowan Ellis, Design Director · · 7 min read

There is a template most agency and SaaS websites now follow. It converts adequately, which is exactly why it has stopped being an advantage.

Distinctiveness works because memory drives consideration. If a buyer cannot recall which site they liked, they default to whoever advertises most aggressively.

You can be distinctive and clear at the same time. Keep the conversion mechanics conventional — obvious navigation, visible pricing signals, predictable form behaviour — and spend your originality budget on typography, composition, and voice.

Motion should confirm interaction, not perform for its own sake. A hover state that responds instantly feels more premium than an elaborate scroll animation that delays content.

Test the distinctive version. In our experience it usually wins, because attention is the scarce resource long before persuasion becomes relevant.
